Description

Marine Digimap delivers a range of high quality, detailed digital geological map data from HRWallingford (trading as SeaZone Solutions). Data, originally sourced from the UK Hydrographic Office, covers UK waters and is available either as maps generated online by Digimap or to download for use with appropriate application software such as GIS or CAD.

Marine Digimap offers two mapping interfaces.  The first, Chart Roam, offers access to HydroView Charts which are raster GeoTIFF renditions from official International Hydrographic Organisation (IHO) chart producers. HydroView Charts are derived from paper charts and chart panels, captured at the scale of compilation, and geo-referenced to the local coordinate reference system. These charts are ideal for general reference and backdrop mapping but are not for navigational use. The charts cover a broad range of scales, from 1:1m to 1:2500.  The second, Marine Roam, offers access to HydroSpatial One, a vector dataset which offers data in six Topic layers.  The mapping interfaces allow the user to view and interact with a full range of datasets. Users can search for specific locations anywhere in Great Britain using a full range of search options, noting that the marine data is only available in coastal and sea areas. Interactive tools allow the user to measure areas and distances on the map, as well as add their own annotations and labels to create simple datasets which can be both imported and exported in a range of formats. Maps, and any associated annotations, can be saved for further examination at a later date. An overview map is provided to give wider context to specific locations and a range of information about the map displayed is given, including the map date, extent, default print scale, projection and cursor coordinates.  For vector-based maps (in Marine Roam) the map content can be controlled, allowing each map to be customised according to any specific requirement. Print files of each map can be generated at a full range of paper sizes from A4 to A0. The range of scales for printing on any given paper size is automatically detected, and a specific scale within that range can be chosen by the user.  Print files are generated as either PDF, JPG or PNG and can be printed directly or downloaded for use elsewhere. Print files include additional marginalia such as the user’s name and institution, date, scale bar and optional national grid lines.  Annotations added to the map by the user may also optionally be included in the print file.

All data products offered are available for download in a variety of data formats.  Users can search for and select their area of interest using either the search function or the map, with options to specify the area of interest using the coordinates of a bounding box.  Multiple data products can be requested for the same area in a single download order, with settings relating to version and format provided for each dataset requested. An “order history” is maintained to allow re-ordering of the same dataset for the same area, while changing only the version or the format.

A wealth of support resources accompanies the service, offering guides on the data specifications, the use of data within popular application software as well as detailed instructions on the use of the service itself.
